Experience a truly awesome winter spectacle.
Each winter, bald eagles gather along the Nooksack River near Deming and the Skagit River near Marblemount to feed on spawned-out salmon. January is one of the best months of the year to photograph them. Bare cottonwoods give clean sightlines, and low winter light and river fog create the moody conditions that make Pacific Northwest wildlife images stand out.
The nearby Skagit Valley is one of the most important wintering areas for waterfowl and raptors on the West Coast. Tens of thousands of snow geese and trumpeter swans feed in its farm fields. Hawks, falcons and short-eared owls hunt the open ground, and in some winters snowy owls show up too. Just west of the valley, Anacortes is the gateway to the Salish Sea, where winter boat tours look for whales, sea lions, harbor seals and seabirds.
With a small group, you get real one-on-one coaching on camera settings, autofocus for birds in flight, composition and field craft. You also get the flexibility to stay with the light and the wildlife instead of following a rigid bus schedule.
